Fjallsárlón

Fjallsárlón feels almost too easy to reach for how dramatic it is. Park nearby, walk a short distance, and suddenly you are standing in front of a glacial lagoon with the glacier spilling down behind it.

Why I recommend it

What I love about Fjallsárlón is how close and personal the glacier feels. Jökulsárlón is bigger and more famous, but Fjallsárlón has a more intimate atmosphere. The glacier seems much closer, the lagoon feels quieter, and the whole stop feels less like a major attraction and more like you have simply stumbled across something incredible. For me, the best part is how little effort it takes. You can pull over, leave the car, walk up towards the lagoon and within minutes you are looking straight at the glacier.

What to do

Do not just stop for a quick photo from the car. Park, walk up to the lagoon and take your time. The closer you get, the more impressive the scale of the glacier becomes. Walk along the edge of the lagoon if conditions allow, find a quieter viewpoint and just sit with it for a while. This is one of those places where doing less actually makes the experience better.

Good to know

Fjallsárlón is usually calmer than Jökulsárlón, but it is still a glacial environment, so conditions can change quickly. Stick to the paths and safe viewing areas, and do not try to get too close to unstable ice or the glacier itself. The weather can also turn fast, so bring layers and something waterproof even if it looks fine when you pull over.
