A remote geothermal soak by the sea
Visited
October 2019

A small geothermal pool by the sea, surrounded by mountains and Icelandic wilderness. Grettislaug feels wonderfully simple and remote. Exactly the kind of place that makes you stop and stay longer than planned.
Why I recommend it
When you are in Iceland, you have to experience the natural geothermal baths, and this one is one of the best experiences. You are sitting in naturally heated water, right by the sea, with mountains rising around you and almost nothing to distract from the landscape. It feels far removed from the polished geothermal baths you find elsewhere in Iceland. There is also a great bit of history behind it. According to the Icelandic sagas, Grettir the Strong swam across from Drangey and used the hot spring here to warm himself afterwards. Whether you come for the story, the scenery or simply a long soak, it is a very memorable stop in North Iceland.
What to do
Get in, slow down and stay for a while. There is no complicated experience here and that is exactly the appeal. Find a comfortable spot in the pool, look out towards the sea and enjoy how wonderfully remote this part of Iceland feels. If you have time, combine it with exploring more of Skagafjörður rather than treating it as a quick photo stop.
Good to know
Want to stay longer in this area? You can actually stay at the camping which is located at the same location. One very important lesson from experience: do not start wiggling or moving the pipe that regulates the hot water. It may look tempting since it is literally sticking out from the water but moving it can release a lot more geothermal water very quickly and the temperature can go from comfortable to insanely hot before you know it. Leave the system as you find it and let the pool regulate naturally. Also remember that this is a remote, natural bathing spot rather than a big spa. Conditions and water temperature can vary, so take your time getting in and check the temperature first.
