Höfðaskógur forest

Looking for a place to hunt for the Northern Lights? Höfðaskógur is a quiet forested area just outside Hafnarfjörður that makes a great escape from the city lights!

Why I recommend it

The Northern Lights are never guaranteed, but choosing the right location helps and this is exactly the kind of place I like for it. Höfðaskógur gives you darker surroundings than central Reykjavík, without requiring a huge drive into the middle of nowhere. The trees and open areas create a much calmer setting, and if the aurora does appear, it feels far more special than watching it between streetlights and buildings. It is also the kind of place where the wait is part of the experience: park up, step into the cold, look up and give the sky some time. Dark locations away from city lights, clear skies and enough solar activity are the main ingredients for seeing the aurora in Iceland.

What to do

Come here after dark when the aurora forecast looks promising. Find a safe place to park, let your eyes adjust to the darkness and give yourself time. Northern Lights hunting usually involves a lot more waiting than people expect, so bring something warm to drink and do not leave after ten minutes just because nothing is happening yet. If the sky stays clear, keep scanning different parts of the horizon rather than staring at one spot.

Good to know

Do not drive here purely because an app shows a high aurora number. Cloud cover matters just as much, and Icelandic weather can change quickly. Check both the aurora forecast and the cloud forecast before leaving, and be prepared to change location if the sky closes in. The best aurora spot is ultimately the one with the clearest, darkest sky that night. Also bring much warmer clothes than you think you need. Standing still outside at night gets cold very quickly.
