Kirkjufell

Kirkjufell is probably Iceland's most recognizable mountain, rising almost perfectly on its own beside the sea. Add the small Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall in front of it and you get one of those views that somehow looks exactly as Icelandic as you imagined Iceland would look.

Why I recommend it

Yes, you have probably seen this mountain on Instagram a thousand times. Go anyway. Kirkjufell rises 463 metres above the Snæfellsnes Peninsula near Grundarfjörður, and its isolated position is what gives it such an unusual, almost perfectly sculpted shape. The classic viewpoint is from Kirkjufellsfoss. The waterfall itself is small, but with Kirkjufell behind it the whole scene comes together. This is another place where being famous does not make it less beautiful.

What to do

Walk around the Kirkjufellsfoss area and look for different compositions of the mountain rather than taking one photo and leaving. If conditions are good, stay a while. The light changes constantly around Snæfellsnes, and a grey mountain can suddenly catch sunlight or disappear into cloud within minutes.

Good to know

Do not assume that because Kirkjufell looks small and neat, it is an easy mountain to climb. The official regional tourism guidance describes the ascent as highly challenging and dangerous, with steep and slippery terrain. Climbing is prohibited in winter, and there have been fatal accidents. For most visitors, the best experience is simply enjoying the mountain from below. Also expect crowds around the classic waterfall viewpoint.
