Traditional Finnish food and a nostalgic interior. Savotta feels like stepping into an older version of Finland in the best possible way.
Why I recommend it
If you want to try genuinely Finnish flavors in Helsinki, this is one of the easiest places to recommend. The food feels traditional without becoming boring, and the whole restaurant adds to the experience. Especially downstairs, where the stone walls and small alcoves make dinner feel much more intimate and atmospheric. It is the kind of place where I would deliberately order things I would not usually find at home because that is exactly why you came to Finland in the first place.
What to do
Start with the Supreme Savotta: an assortment of Finnish appetizers from both land and water. It is probably the easiest way to try a range of traditional flavors in one go. And if bear is available, order it. Seriously. It comes as a small tasting portion, so you do not have to commit to an entire main course, and it is exactly the kind of thing you will remember afterwards. After that, let the rest of the menu guide you reindeer, fish and other Finnish classics are all very much at home here.
Good to know
Reserve a table. This is not somewhere I would leave to chance, especially if you already know when you want to go. And when you book, ask for a table downstairs. The stone walls and little alcoves make that part of the restaurant feel especially cosy and atmospheric, and for me it adds a lot to the experience. Also, if you specifically want to try the bear, ask whether it is available when you arrive as it is not guaranteed to be on hand every day.
