Why I recommend it

Sometimes, especially in a big city, you just want a little peace and quiet without actually leaving the city behind. Torgterrassen is exactly that kind of place. It’s definitely a little weather-dependent, but if the sun shows itself — even for half an hour — this bar is well worth a visit. The terrace feels like a small green oasis above the streets of Oslo, filled with plants and a relaxed atmosphere that makes you forget you’re right in the middle of the city. You’re not quite high enough to get sweeping views over Oslo, but somehow that doesn’t take away from the experience. If anything, it makes it feel even more intimate: tucked away from the busy streets below, while still being completely connected to the city.

What to order

Come here for a drink first and foremost. Grab one of their cocktails or ask the staff for a wine recommendation and enjoy it outside in the sun. One thing I especially like is that you can also just order a small bowl of snacks with your drink — think chips, nuts or olives. Nothing complicated, just exactly the kind of thing you want when you’re sitting on a terrace and don’t necessarily feel like ordering a full meal. If you are staying for food, there are plenty of proper dishes on the menu as well.

Good to know

This is definitely a place to save for good weather. The terrace is the main reason to visit, so check the forecast and try to time your visit with a bit of sunshine. It can get busy on beautiful days, so making a reservation is a good idea if you don’t want to leave it to chance. Also worth knowing: despite being a rooftop, it feels more like a hidden garden in the middle of Oslo than a classic panoramic rooftop bar.
